We were new patients and brought our cat to Gateway after he began turning yellow and was clearly dealing with liver issues. They ran all the in-house tests they could and did everything possible to help. After two visits in two weeks, they were upfront that he needed more advanced care and referred us to a local emergency hospital. Unfortunately, our cat did not survive his liver disease and passed shortly after being admitted to the hospital. Although we were only seen at Gateway twice, every interaction was positive. The staff was friendly, accommodating, compassionate, and reasonably priced. But what stood out was what happened after.. When Gateway learned our cat had passed (after they followed up with the vet hospital) they sent us a personalized handwritten condolence card signed by the entire staff. That level of follow-up and compassion for a patient they had only seen twice and had no history with meant a great deal to us. Because of that, we will absolutely be bringing our other pets to Gateway in the future.

This review has been a long time coming; Gateway Vet has seen both of my dogs for coming on 10 years with absolutely zero issues. This includes a very touch and go incident with my Chiweenie after he was attacked and required extensive surgery and convalescence several years back. Dr. Dahlquist has done a fantastic job providing care over the years and even though I now live across town, I still bring my pets here. I don't have enough good things to say; thank you to the staff at Gateway Vet for keeping my pets well taken care of!!

I went in as a new patient and had a great first visit. The doctors/techs were kind, patient, and friendly. They told me my dog had 3-6 months, and I needed to take urgent action. It took 5 phone calls, 8 emails and 6 weeks to get the x-rays for my dog. I did not receive any follow up information about medications, despite additional emails and calls hoping to get that for my dog. If I had an extra 400$, I would definitely have just gotten another X-ray but I kept being told, "we will send that to you soon,". By the time I received my dog's medical records to send to an oncologist, my dog started hacking up blood and had to be put down. I would have loved a bit more promptness and care with helping me find resources for my dog, as I was more than willing to pay for surgeries or see what kind of medication I could get to ease anything. I did not get the 3 months I was forecasted though, but I know those things are hard to gauge. I did feel good when I was in the clinic, but the lack of urgency in offering me X-rays I paid I feel debilitated how I could have prepared better to support my dog

My doberman had a serious complication to her ear surgery. When we called asking to bring her in we were told no. They are willing to do the surgeries but not willing to help when your animal needs additional emergency medical treatment. Do NOT recommend.

MOST AFFORDABLE vet clinic in Portland! 💯 Trust me, I spent 4 hours on research and called 8 places and looked at 12 animal hospitals/clinics in the city (from large hospitals with multiple locations to small clinics to specialty holistic places). My 3 year old pup was due for vaccines and annual wellness exam. I got quotes from other places ranging $250-600 - insanity! Gateways’s rates (quoted by Alyssa on the phone who took the time to answer all my questions) were almost too good to be true after all the other quotes. But the reviews were also better than most other animal hospitals. So we scheduled (for 2 days later, no wait either) and went! Just finished our exam with Dr. Dahlquist and assistant Lynn, who took the best care of us. Dr. Dahlquist was hilarious, gentle, caring and really good with keeping my anxious pup calm. This was the first time getting shots and drawing blood was no big deal - Milo didn’t even wince. The whole exam took about 30 minutes. No one rushed us. The whole staff was friendly. The hospital was clean. Our questions were answered. We even got free treats and goodies to go. SWEET DEAL! Our entire bill was just over $100 for everything including vaccines. So happy we found this place! We are now big fans of Gateway Veterinary Hospital and will be recommending it to all others.

I have been going to this Vet for so long. First with my kitty Samson. He passed long ago. Then with other cats. With my dog Pixie for 6 years. In the middle of figuring out what is wrong with Pixie. Believes Pixie is having mild seizures. We first tried CBD drops but had to bump her up to medication once a day. The doctor called back after leaving a message. He is a great doctor. I call a lot and they don’t seem to mind. this day they were amazing.. Not so much Anymore!!! I changing my review from 5 to 2. The doctor is amazing. I’ve had him since 2002 with all my animals. They have new people in the office, even a nurse. I don’t recommend them. Long story short they did not treat my fur baby good at all. They didn’t listen to what I said about putting anything around her neck after having a harness and leash already on her. My dog will not go in that office without me ever. I will go for the doctor but I will not hand over my dog to anyone. It’s a long story not going to get into it but it was not a good day for my dog very unnecessary.
