Veterinary Specialists of Birmingham

Small edit: I see a LOT of people complaining about cost. I didn't exactly want to pay what I did (cheaper than I thought), I completely understand that. However, this is not a regular vet. They are emergency care specialists. Not a general practitioner. I waited 4 hours but gladly would have waited longer. I brought a book. My pup was happy! 🙂 My heart does go out to those who felt otherwise. Quite literally, some of the best staff I've come in contact with! I drove almost 4 hours for my dog Sadie's, consult with Dr. Vaughn. The techs, front desk girls and the doctor, were so welcoming! I was very nervous as I'm incredibly protective over my girl, but they treated her so well. She got a lot of love and was just hamming it up! She actually loves going to the doctor. Dr. Vaughn, explained everything so well. They had to do some xrays and other little tests, and he explained every single thing they done, why they did it and possible outcomes! I would gladly drive back to Birmingham from Bowling Green, Kentucky for my dog to be in the wonderful, capable hands, of this staff!

All of the staff members were incredibly kind, compassionate, and attentive. My boy was very well taken care of from start to finish. Dr. Thomas was thorough, knowledgeable, and took the time to clearly explain what we were dealing with. I felt completely confident in both his expertise and the treatment plan he created for my pup. Our dog, Opie, was a recent patient at VSB. We took him at 3:30 am on a Sunday morning. He was seen promptly. We were told what the tests would cost before anything was done. When we got the results, the doctor explained what the treatment would be. When we left, we knew Opie was in good hands. For the next few days, one of the doctors updated me at least twice a day. Any change in treatment plan ( including the cost) was carefully explained. When we visited Opie, it was clear that he was receiving loving care. Discharge plans were clearly explained. Then I was sent a detailed report (23 pages long) of his hospital stay. This care was expensive but merited. We hope we do not need emergency care again but we would not hesitate to take Opie back.

My pups seem to think the best time to fall ill is on the weekend. And of course it’s major, so no putting it off until Monday. I’m so thankful, albeit poorer, for all the wonderful staff at VSB. As traumatic as these incidents are it’s comforting to know your baby is getting the absolute best care. To have 24 hour attentiveness given by such a knowledgeable and compassionate staff helps reassure yourself, that other than praying, you’re doing everything you can to provide your pet with a fighting chance to have a positive outcome. They call you with updates. They don’t get snarky when you call with questions. Truly a kind and caring facility for the pet and its human(s). Phoebe is home and recovering. I am grateful for VSB . Phoebe says the jury is still out.. All she knows is that as nice as they seemed, they kept her in a cage and stuck her with needles. We won’t even talk about shaving the legs! She’s embarrassed.

I can’t thank Dr. Vaughn & the rest of the surgical staff at VSB enough! My mini dachshund, Ruger, had a herniated disk in his neck that Dr. Vaughn performed surgery on this past Monday (3/23) & while he still has a long recovery ahead, I can already see a huge improvement in him! Rugers nurse, Meghan, was so kind to me & was happy to give me updates even when I called multiple times a day. Hopefully I never have to use VSB again, but if any of my dogs need surgery or specialized care, they are who I will go to! Thanks again to all of the staff at VSB!!

On the way home from the park my sweet girl, a 2 year old Staffy mix, had somehow got her toe caught in the safety harness in the seat. I went straight to Veterinary Specialists of Birmingham. They paged a doctor and we were admitted to a room immediately and in mere minutes I heard happy voices as the door opened and one of the doctors came in smiling saying "she did SO great - so brave!" And here comes my baby flanked by sweet folks loving on her. Y'all are amazing! Thank you!!

Ashton, one of the veterinary technicians here, is absolutely amazing! He is kind, compassionate, and an excellent communicator. He is very observant and had great instincts when caring for our dog. As a pet parent, it’s reassuring to know your dog is being cared for by someone who is genuinely engaged and committed to their well-being. Ashton made sure our dog, Rocky, came home relaxed and happy, which was the best possible outcome from a stressful situation. We are very grateful for the care and attention he provided.
